JSONPath Query
The JSONPath tester runs JSONPath expressions against your JSON and shows the matched nodes, with a built-in syntax cheat sheet so you do not have to memorise the spec. Each result can be copied on its own, which makes it great for pulling specific fields out of a large or deeply nested document. Everything runs in your browser.
How to use it
- 1
Paste your JSON
Provide the document you want to query, or upload a .json file.
- 2
Write a JSONPath expression
Enter an expression such as $.store.book[*].author, using the cheat sheet for reference.
- 3
Inspect the matches
See how many nodes matched and which ones, so you can refine the expression until it is exact.
- 4
Copy a result
Copy individual matches for use in code, tests or documentation.
Key features
Built-in cheat sheet
Common selectors and filters are documented right on the page.
Match preview
See exactly which nodes an expression returns before committing it to code.
Copy per result
Copy any single match instead of the whole document.
Local execution
Queries run in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
Works on deep structures
Recursive descent and filters help you reach values buried in nested data.
Fast iteration
Edit the expression and the results update immediately.
Common errors & troubleshooting
- ! Remember that $ refers to the root; forget it and the expression will not match.
- ! $..author uses recursive descent and matches every author at any depth — powerful but potentially slow on huge documents.
- ! Filter expressions like $[?(@.price < 10)] select nodes by predicate rather than position.
- ! If an expression returns nothing, test it against a smaller slice first to confirm the path.
Frequently asked questions
Is JSONPath the same as jq?
No. JSONPath is a compact query syntax for addressing nodes; jq is a full transformation language. Use JSONPath for extraction and the jq playground when you need to reshape data.
Is my JSON uploaded when I run a query?
No. The query runs locally in your browser; the document never leaves your device.
Which JSONPath features are supported?
The common selectors, wildcards, recursive descent, slicing and filter expressions are all supported, and the on-page cheat sheet lists them.
Can I copy just one matched value?
Yes. Each result can be copied individually.
